Madame Web, No Thank You  |  Column from the Editor

After the lackluster reviews of “The Marvels,” I’ve reached a point where I’m comfortable saying no to superhero films. So, to Sony’s “Madame Web” film that has seen many claim that it’s the worst superhero movie of all time, I say no thank you (at least in theaters).

Running an independent review website means I get to pick what movies I write about and which ones I pass on. This website has also always been a hobby for me — no one gets paid and it isn’t a job. Yet it can often feel like one.

Readers of this site will notice the myriad Marvel Disney Plus shows I’ve covered last year, many of which I didn’t enjoy. “Secret Invasion” was the breaking point for me, as the constant stream of releases just came too much to manage.

Outside of this website, watching movies and TV shows is also something I enjoy with my long-term girlfriend and truth be told, I just don’t see the point in making the trip to the movie theater to see something that might bore or upset us. We both work fulltime and our time is finite and valuable — sometimes a film like “Madame Web” doesn’t make the cut.

Marvel releases used to be special events. There also used to only be a handful a year, which made it easy to keep up with them.

But the franchise has turned into a multibillion dollar commodity that Disney wants to produce as much content for as possible, which has diluted the brand. Yes. I know “Madame Web” is not strictly an MCU film, but Sony’s Venomverse films certainly contribute to the superhero burnout I’ve been experiencing.

I started this website to share my opinions on movies that I love, not comment on every derivative work that’s released. After five years and hundreds of reviews, I want to reconnect with what drew me to make this site in the first place — to review films worth writing about.
