Watching “One Piece” For The First Time (Part 9): Dressrosa (Through God Usopp) | Column from the Editor

Two years ago, I started watching “One Piece,” and I started documenting my journey getting through the show on InReview’s TikTok page. You can watch my previous batch of “One Piece” TikToks here.

It might have taken months, but I finally got over my burnout form this show. These batch of TikToks run from the Corrida Coliseum tournament to the marvelous “God Usopp” scene in the Dressrosa underground.

I just had to get over some really bad episodes where almost nothing happened. Over the past few months, many of these episodes became background noise while I was on my phone or playing a video game. Like Punk Hazard, the show did pick up once I entered the arc’s endgame.

With that being said, I fully support Netflix’s “The One Piece” redo of the anime adaptation that will take an approach similar to “Dragon Ball Z Kai,” as it promises to ditch filler content and fix the show’s pacing problems.

The current adaptation of “One Piece” is a great example of how a really strong story can suffer when a studio decides to adapt it at a slower pace rather than stick to a more spread out or abridged release schedule. It doesn’t kill the show, but it does bury brilliant moments of emotional payoff under tons of lifeless scenes of people running and redundant flashback sequences.
