Before we begin, a quick note: I am not an expert on dissociative identity disorder, and I don’t pretend to be. So I apologize in advance for any faux pas made here and know that I will make an effort to rectify my ignorance moving forward.
Up until now, I was trying really hard to get into this show and that’s not the cast and crews’ fault. But recently, there hasn’t been much about the MCU that I haven’t been excited for. Like how the new Doctor Strange movie comes out next month, but I don’t feel the need to pre-order a ticket. But that’s all for another day. I will, however, say that I’m getting more of my attention driven here.
Marc Spector is in control of the body and in Cairo. After Steven tries to break through, Spector blacks out while and an internal fight gets in the way with tracking down Arthur Harrow. After the trail runs cold, Khonshu pressures the other Egyptian gods to summon their avatars together. Layla catches up with Marc and the two meet up with Anton Mogart (Gaspard Abdalla), a colleague of Layla’s who has knowledge to where they can find the tomb of Ammit.
The meeting between the avatars is interesting and does well to establish the Egyptian pantheon into the MCU. Aside from Khonshu, the rest of the gods are more passive in the modern world-with their avatars playing observatory roles. And when Harrow is summoned, the exchange between him and Khonshu feels like fights with that one relative who’s always instigating things but you always get away with it anyway.
Another thing this episode does well is flesh out the relationship between Marc and Layla. Beneath the tension and moments where one is at their wit’s end with the other, you can tell that they care for each other and work well as a team. Marc truly cares about Layla and you see the reluctance to share information about her father’s murder. These two are like an action-packed Tara and Greg from United States of Tara, and I can’t help but wonder how things would’ve been if Layla had known more about Steven. Speaking of him, I love how he becomes an asset when putting together the map to find the temple and look forward to the two alters becoming a better team.
This isn’t the longest it took me to get invested in a Marvel show (Loki at episode five), but this left me excited for the show. The acting is getting me invested and the action is brilliantly choreographed. And after a suspenseful final scene, I can’t wait to see what happens next.
