Psychics and murder. What more could you want?

“Deadly Fate” by Angela Marsons explores just that. The 18th book in the DI Kim Stone series follows the titular Stone as she investigates the death of psychic Sandra Deakin — the outcome of which no medium gazing into a crystal ball can predict.

Deakin has been found mutilated in the graveyard of a local church, and it is abundantly clear that whoever did this for her hated her.

Stone’s inquiry into the timeline leading up to the murder points her towards a group of women, each of whom has a secret they are not willing to share with her. Just when she begins to think her murderer might be one of these women, another young man working in a psychic call center is killed, foiling her theory.

Who is the murderer? What do they have against these psychics?

Marsons answers these questions in an interesting, thrilling and empathetic story that makes the reader digest the lasting effects of grief and emotional trauma.

The case, seeming straightforward, is later complicated by plenty of dead ends to keep readers guessing. The book also ends on a thrilling cliffhanger I can’t wait to see resolved.

Marsons grabbed me through her crisp and fast-paced storytelling. I highly recommend this book for fans of police procedural thrillers, particularly those who are not into dark and morbid stories.
