Honest Reviews. Sharp Takes. All Things Entertainment

Detective Ellie Reeves is back in action in the most eerie and chilling case she has ever encountered.

When a little girl, Betsy, goes missing from one of the holiday cabins along the Widow Lake, the entire police department is mobilized to find the little girl before it is too late.

Betsy is found later in the night, but the search for her leads the police to a car in the bottom of the lake from which the remains of a body are recovered.

Further investigation leads police to the disappearance of a young mother and student Amy Dean and her two year old daughter Paisley.

The search for answers lead the team of police to an abandoned shack, from where a few pieces of bones are recovered, the DNA of which matches Amy’s. Reeves begins to suspect that Amy may only be one of the many victims of this perpetrator.

Even before she could fully grasp the case, three women and one little girl are kidnapped. In a race against time, the detective must solve the most convoluted case she has ever come across, before more lives are lost.

Rita Herron has the ability to draw a reader into the twisted and sinister small town she has created, through her descriptive and elaborate writing style. The reader is just pulled into the suffocating heat and ominous woods of the small town that is home to a dark evil that has been lurking in the shadows for a long time. The only complaint I did have is that the story is a tad more dark and chilling for my taste.

In spite of it, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and can’t wait to see what Herron brings forth in the upcoming books.
