On Monday, we lost James Earl Jones, but his voice might live on through AI.
I don’t often write on celebrity deaths, but Jones’ hits differently. The voice of Darth Vader is dead. Also, the man behind Mufasa in “The Lion King,” Terence Mann in “Field of Dreams” and dozens of other spectacular roles. Jones has the rare EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Tony and Oscar), which firmly planted him in the upper echelons of the acting world.
He was an important part of mine and others’ childhoods. For “Star Wars” in particular, he’s yet another casualty of the original trilogy cast. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Billy Dee Williams are among the few who are still with us. I guess that’s to be expected, considering the first film came out 47 years ago.
That doesn’t make the news of Jones’ passing any easier or more welcome. Time marches on and everyone dies.
It’s hard to imagine anyone else playing Darth Vader. Disney likely agreed, as his voice was digitally recreated using AI for its “Obi-Wan Kenobi” show, a practice that I’m vehemently against. Using AI to fabricate a performance is not only extremely dishonest to viewers, it’s morally reprehensible.
Now that Jones is dead, it might happen again. Before passing, he gave Disney permission to recreate his voice with AI.
Disney, please don’t. I know you’ve gotten away with it before in “Obi-Wan Kenobi,” but please, out of respect for Jones and his legacy, let his voice rest. He might have signed off the rights to let you do as you wish with his voice, but it’s time to put a stop to bringing back dead actors with this technology.
It’s disrespectful, it takes away jobs from living actors and at its worst, it can be seen as a disturbing abomination. Look no further than the backlash to the digital recreation of Ian Holm in “Alien: Romulus.”
I’d love to see one more performance from the legendary Jones. He’s irreplaceable. But AI is not the answer.
If his characters appear in future projects, recast them and that includes Darth Vader. He might be the definitive voice of Vader, but that doesn’t mean others aren’t capable of bringing him to life.
Disney, it’s time to do the right thing.
