Honest Reviews. Sharp Takes. All Things Entertainment

Wouldn’t it be nice to quit your office job, escape the city and work on a tropical island filled with Pokemon? That’s the central premise of Netflix’s miniseries “Pokemon Concierge.”

The show follows Haru (Karen Fukuhara), a young woman who has dropped everything after he boyfriend dumped her via text message to work at a Pokemon resort on a tropical island. Her work is different every day and mostly comprises of playing with Pokemon and finding ways to make them happy.

The series is very brief, comprised of four episodes that are all under 20 minutes long. While young kids might certainly enjoy this too, it’s clearly targeted towards adults looking for some escapism. Haru often remarks how it’s great that she doesn’t have to wake up to check her email or endure a long commute to her office job — things adults can relate to. The show also takes its time showing the viewer stunning vistas filled with sparkling oceans, lush green mountains and soft, sandy beaches. Every day at work is like a vacation for Haru.

With that being said, while the stakes are low, there is still plenty for her to do. Throughout the show, she struggles with finding herself and learning what tasks she’s good at, while helping Pokemon. Two episodes in particular has her help a Magikarp that can’t swim find its floatie and PIkachu that isn’t very loud finds its voice respectively — both thin metaphors for Haru herself.

There are other workers on the island — Ms. Watanabe (Lori Alan), her boss; Tyler (Jason Keaton), the resort’s cook; and Alisa (Imani Hakim), an artist — but they all serve as mentor figures for Haru and don’t have arcs of their own.

“Pokemon Concierge” is a brief, fun time that adults and kids alike will enjoy. There’s not much to it, but it’s certainly a relaxing watch.
