“Doomed Legacy,” which features an intriguing case, is a wonderful addition to the Rick Cahill series. The story starts off about 1 1/2 years after the last story left off. Rick has only been taking up less dangerous jobs at his wife’s insistence. However, when a client of his is brutally murdered, he can’t help but hit the streets again, in his quest for justice for his client. He has still not told his wife the devastating news he had received 1 1/2 years earlier regarding his illness and the changes in his behavior because of it have begun to create a strain in his marriage.
Coyle has managed to impress me one more time with a tightly written thriller that also manages to engage me emotionally. The tragic hero aspect to Rick’s character plays an enormous part in connecting the readers to him. His vulnerabilities and flaws make him more human; but it’s his unfailing sense of justice that endears him to us. We sympathize with him and want him to succeed.
The story is thrilling and has an intricate enough plot to make it a very good mystery. The pacing is on point as always and the story never gets boring at any point. I loved the interactions between Rick and Moira when they team up for their investigation into a common enemy; I can’t get enough of them.
I enjoyed this book very much and can’t wait to read the next book in the series, particularly after the cliffhanger we are left with at the end.
This book gets 5 out of 5 stars.
