“The Third Victim” is the first book in a series featuring Attorney Robin Lockwood, as well as her colleagues in a law firm she has recently joined. The book begins with Robin’s mentor, Regina Barrister, a renowned criminal trial lawyer, asking Robin to join the firm as an associate. Though things start at a high note for her, Robin begins noticing that something is wrong with Regina and tries her best to keep that from interfering in Regina’s defense of Alex Mason in a high-profile murder trial.
Amidst all these concerns regarding Regina, Robin also feels that the case against Alex doesn’t make sense in certain aspects. Is Alex really the culprit? Is the firm in a position to be able to provide him with the best defense? To get the answers to both questions, you’ll have to read the book.
The story starts off in a good note and the intriguing elements of the story makes it quite interesting. The way the book addresses mental illness and the impact it has on a person at all levels, using the backdrop of a law firm, is impressive and the author has managed to make me deeply feel for the character dealing with it. But the other characters in the book were not given enough space and so they failed to make an impression on me.
It is a fairly entertaining read but not very impressive. I recommend this book to people who like to read a courtroom trial drama filled with suspense and intrigue but don’t mind if the characters don’t have real depth.
This story gets 4 out of 5 stars.
