“The Virgin Who Captured a Viscount” is the fifth book in “The Swooning Virgins Society” series by Anna Bradley. While the first four books in the series told the stories of the ladies belonging to the society, through this book we get to see Daniel Brixton’s story. Daniel, a man of many illegal talents, is the jack of all trades of the The Clifford Charity School for Wayward Girls and using his dubious skills to help out the women of the Society is part of his job description. The story begins with him getting ambushed by Mairi Cameron, during one such job for the society. An independent and self-sufficient woman, Mairi is quite ferocious and is someone who can take care of herself. Though instantly intrigued by her, being the lone bear that he is, Daniel doesn’t want to do anything with Mairi.
In spite of his efforts to stay away from her, however, Mairi constantly pursues him. As it turns out, Mairi is Daniel’s childhood friend, but he is unable to recognize or remember her and this leaves Mairi confused. On her repeated pleas for him to save her grandmother, who is about to be hanged for his “murder,” Daniel travels to Scotland with her to get to the bottom of the mystery. Thus begins two headstrong and self-sufficient people’s journey to a small town in historical Scotland and towards each other’s hearts.
What begins as a regular boy meets girl romance morphs into something intriguing when the details behind Mairi’s grandmother’s case are revealed and Daniel’s background is revealed little by little. Once again, Anna Bradley shows that she is a master storyteller with the way she manages to marry the romance and mystery elements of the story seamlessly. The pacing is on point and it was quite exciting to read about historic Scotland in this context.
This is one another must read Anna Bradley book and I can’t recommend this book enough for lovers of romantic suspense.
This book gets 5 out of 5 stars.
